Rent control. The City of St. Paul, Minnesota introduced a rent control policy that came from a citizen vote in the 2021elections. It was criticized as being one of the strictest rent controls in the country. Describe what the control entailed, how it came to be. What is implication for residents, landlords, tenants, and development. What has happened since its introduction in 2022?
Canadian ban on foreigners buying residential property.Effective January 1, 2023, Canada placed a two-year ban on foreign investment in residential property. From a tweet by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, “Houses shouldn’t sit empty when so many Canadians are trying to buy a home. So, we’re going to ban foreign ownership in Canada for the next two years, and tax the existing vacant, foreign-owned properties.” Research and expand on this. What do you think of this idea? Explain from both sides. Does the US have a similar issue?
