GRADE 12 EARTH SPACE AND SCIENECE COURSE
I LOVE YOU
Earth and Space Summative: make a lesson
Your goal is to make the material to run a 60-minute class on a topic of your choice from the course. Your lesson must have the following items:
1. Hook
2. New concept instruction
3. Learning activity
4. Homework
5. Assessment/Reflection
Item Breakdowns
1. Hook Introduce the topic in an interesting way without conveying any information about the topic. You don’t need to make this yourself, you can use something from the internet, a textbook, etc. A hook can take as little as 30 seconds but limit it to 5 minutes maximum.
Examples of what you can do:
a. A related joke
b. YouTube video
c. An infographic
d. A news story e. Kahoot
2. New Concept Instruction
In this section, your students will learn the required content for the lesson. You must make this material yourself (din’tt use existing materials). Think about how your teachers teach you new material or come up with a creative way that you wish your teachers used. I want to leave this very open to encourage creativity. That said, assigning students to read a chapter in the textbook and make notes is not a very interesting, engaging or effective.
Suggestions of what you can do:
a. Make your own video of you teaching the topic
b. Make a game
c. learning stations
da lab or experiment
e. Traditional lesson with slides (yes this is ok – just include your speaking notes in point form if you are going to run a lecture or add an audio recording)
3. Learning activity
Give your students time to practice what you have just taught them. While you can use other people’s materials for inspiration, I want you to make this yourself. Make sure you include an answer sheet if your learning activity has questions. If it is a project or task, provide an example that you would show your students.
Suggestions of what you can do:
a. Whiteboard problems
b. Research project with a report or a presentation
c. Lab or experiment
d. Worksheet with questions
e. Games
YOUR ALMOST THERE
4. Homework:
Students will remember more content if they interact with the material numerous times. Design a homework assignment that will reinforce what they have learned from your class. Don’t include anything new that you didn’t teach. Since no one really likes homework, try to make it fun, if you can’t make it fun, make it short (less than 15 minutes). Make sure you make an example of what you expect your students to submit. For example, if you want them to make a
Make sure you make an example of what you expect your students to submit. For example, if you want them to make a jingle/song, you will need to make a jingle/song as an example. Don’t perform the same activity as your learning activity. For example, if your learning activity was a worksheet, you can have a worksheet for homework. a. Worksheet with answers b. Have your students teach a family member the main concept and record them explaining it back to you c. make a poster
5. Assessment/Reflection
Students should get feedback on their learning and/or reflect on their learning. make an assessment to find out how your students are doing with this new concept or create something that will make them reflect on their learning. This should take less than 5 minutes including the debrief. Again, provide solutions to your assessment.
Suggestions on what you can if you go the assessment route:
a. Kahoot
b. Exit slip (this is a question or two on a sheet of paper that students answer at the end of the class)
c. Teacher-Student Interview (list the questions you would ask plus the answers)
d. Peer to peer interview (list the questions you would ask plus the answers) e. Google Forms quiz
f. Graphic organizer like a Venn Diagram
Suggestions on what you can if you go the assessment route:
a. Write the one-minute paper
b. Make a sketch that conveys today’s lesson
c. Answer a questionnaire
d. Email the teacher three questions you still have
e. Journal entry
