The volume at a section of a two-lane highway is 1500veh/hr in each direction and the density is about 25veh/km. A large dump truck loaded with soil from an adjacent construction site joins the traffic stream and travels at a speed of 10 km/hr for a length of 2.5km along the upgrade before turning off onto a dump site. Due to the relatively high flow in the opposite direction, it is impossible for any car to pass the truck. Vehicles behind the truck therefore have to travel at the speed of the truck which results in the formation of a platoon and a shockwave develops having a density of 100veh/km and a flow of 1000veh/hr.

(a) Determine the speed of the shockwave
(b) Draw a space – time diagram for the showing
 A vehicle ahead of the dump track
 The dump track trajectory
 2 vehicles following the dump truck
(c) What measures will you recommend to the Roads Department to help address this phenomenon of shockwaves during peak hours?
