This case study assignment requires you to apply the moral reasoning you learned about in chapters 3, 4, and 5 of the textbook, as you analyze issues from this week’s reading on climate change, “Your Questions About Food and Climate Change, Answered.”
The Case:
Following a decision by the Berkeley, CA city council to phase out animal products in city-provided meals (you can read about this decision here Links to an external site.) a group of CSUN students has proposed that CSUN dining services should also phase out all animal products. The students argue that it is morally wrong for the university to continue serving animal products, given the impact of animal products on climate change.
As President Beck considers this proposal, she would like your input on the morality of serving animal products at CSUN.
Your Assignment:
Please write a short essay in which you evaluate whether or not it is morally permissible for the university to continue serving animal products on campus, given what you know about food and climate change. You must give THREE moral arguments to support your evaluation in your essay.
the first must include at least one normative premise involving obligations
the second must include at least one normative premise involving consequences, and
the third must include at least one normative premise about virtues or vices
Be sure to use your knowledge of these types of moral reasoning, and details from the article, to support your argument. You should also use specific details from the assigned article(s) on climate change in order to strengthen your argument.
Here is an example of strong student work from an analogous assignment that’s based on different case studies.
***For detailed instructions on case study assignments, see this note about case studies.
Your short essay should include these components:
A short summary of the issue you will discuss.
Three moral arguments. Each must contain several premises and a moral conclusion. Please write the premises and conclusion in a numbered list, following the format modeled in Chapters 1 and 2 of the textbook.
A concluding discussion.
