You are the education reporter for an online news organization that serves residents in the Forest Area School District, a fictional school district, serving the city of New Leaf and surrounding towns (population about 35,000). The district is home to 7,000 students and has a single high school of about 2,500 students; two middle schools, each with about 800 students; and six elementary schools. The decision-making body is a seven-member school board (members are called “directors”) elected by area residents.
You attended the school board meeting and, after live tweeting it, are expected to write-a story about what was discussed. Which topics will you cover in your story?
The bullet points below represent the main topics covered as you reported them on Twitter. Rank them based on their newsworthiness with 1 being the most newsworthy and 7 the least newsworthy. Then write-a short paragraph explaining your choices.
Jerry Williams, who has taught PE at the high school for 30 years and who coached junior varsity football at Forest Area High School for the last 10 years, is retiring.
In a presentation, Student Statistics, a local consulting firm hired by the board, forecast a decline in enrollment at the elementary level. While elementary enrollment has been stable at about 1,650 for the past five years, statistical models indicate that enrollment will steadily decline to 1,300 by 2025 and stay there for several years.
Judy Davis has been hired as an administrative assistant in the district’s finance office.
Middle school assistant principal Valerie Williams resigned effectively immediately. She had held the position for less than one year.
The state Department of Education released the scores from mandatory testing for all school districts. High school students’ scores in Forest Area declined for the second year; middle school students’ scores were stable; and elementary students’ scores were up.
A leak at the high school’s swimming pool has closed the facility for all PE classes, the high school swim team and community use. Cost of repair is estimated at $250,000, and the repair will take six weeks.
The school board requested athletic director Mark Fox to draft a new policy concerning the use of performance-enhancing drugs by high school athletes. The policy will include a provision that student athletes found to be using steroids will be suspended from participating on team sports. Fox reported the high school principal (Ruth Bowden) said that several members of the varsity football and basketball teams told her steroid use is happening among athletes.

The grade results among elementary, middle and high school students was most important because not only have high impact and proximity, but it also is important to a wider range of families in the area. Second, the decline in enrollment and the expectectation of a continued decline at the elementary school level has high consequence for those who have a child going into elementary school as well as anyone who’s child will be attending in upcoming years. The middle school principal resigning has high prominence as she is in the public eye in her community. Not only this, but the fact she held the position less than a year means there must be an interesting reason. The new policy regarding performance enhancing drugs has high conflict for those on the team doing drugs as they will be punished, those not doing drugs as they will lose good players, and the community as a whole as the team may get a lot worse. The retirement of Jerry Williams gives variety and would be an uplifting change of pace from the mostly negative stories above. The leak in the pool has a great impact for those involved in swim, but the proximity for everyone else in the community is not there as they don’t use the pools. Lastly, the hiring of Judy Davis has no proximity to anyone but those working in the finance office.
